Books by authors in the country you're visiting

Anyone pick up books while traveling by home grown authors? This is something I aspire to, although rarely accomplish, both out of practicality (not much room to carry around books) and opportunity (I don't always get to local shops that have books in english).

So far, I picked up "Double" by Jose Saramago while in Portugal (didn't start until after I'd left the country, still reading it), and I just bought Aleksander Hemon's debut, "The Question of Bruno" in Sarajevo. That author lives in the US now and writes in english, but the stories in this book do focus on the former Yugoslavia. I'm looking forward to reading them.

This would be easier to do if I were an e-book reader, but holding an actual book is a big part of the joy of reading for me

Yes! I try to find a book from the place before I go, but I also love going in local bookstores and looking at what books they put out on display in their local sections. For my last trip I read Anne Frank's Diary on my ereader on the plane to Amsterdam so that I was totally ready for the Anne Frank House Museum.

I was talking with a friend about this- I knew has all-time favorite book is Les Liaisons Dangereuses, but what I didn't know is that everywhere he travels he seeks out a copy of the book in the native language of wherever he is. His most recent trip was to Portugal, and sure enough he bought a Portuguese translation! I thought that was kind of cool...don't know which book I'd select to do that with.
